Your damp wall is telling you something
Same patch, several causes. Painting over it hides the clue.
- The claim
- "Insulating a home always makes it healthier."
- Why it doesn't add up
- Insulation usually does make a home healthier, so long as the air can still move. Official guidance says some energy-saving work can cut the amount of fresh air getting through, and if nobody deals with that, damp and mould can get worse, not better. The word that fails is "always".
- How it could be better
- Diagnose first. Treat insulation, heating and ventilation as one job, not three.

gov.uk, "Understanding and addressing the health risks of damp and mould in the home" (updated 1 Apr 2026): "some energy efficiency interventions may reduce overall ventilation rates… If ventilation is not addressed, this can increase the risk of damp and mould, poor indoor air quality and overheating"; and energy-efficient homes are typically less prone to damp and mould "provided that ventilation is adequate". VERIFIED. "Treat it as one job" is OUR READING, consistent with the guidance's whole-house approach.
